Hundreds of passengers on New York's Staten Island Ferry had to be evacuated after the boat's engine caught fire. Emergency services were called to a blaze in the engine room at around 5pm yesterday (22/12) and helped around 868 people off safely. Footage shows how the crowd of passengers all donning bright orange lifejackets slowly made their way to the exit. The coastguard managed to evacuate passengers in less than an hour to the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. Local media reported at least five people were injured with three taken to hospital. New York Fire Department said the fire was contained in the engine room and will wait 24 hours while the vessel is anchored to monitor temperatures.
