Monkey mask is a traditional art that has long been well known in Indonesia, especially in East Java, Central Java and West Java. In Javanese culture, they usually call it Ledhek Kthek and Tandhak bedhes which means monkey shows, in Indonesian it is called the monkey mask.
According to Matthew Isaac Cohen, a professor of Indonesian theater culture from the Royal Holloway University of London, the show featuring monkeys and dogs was reproduced in Indonesia. This miniature circus is one of the most common busking entertainments in markets, rural streets and cities throughout western Indonesia. These acrobatic performances became common in the early 1890s.
