The Paupers are a group from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 1964 as The Spats. The main driving force behind the band was drummer Skip Prokop. According to legend, the band rehearsed 40 hours a week. She then headed straight to the local recording studio, where she demoed three of Skip Prokop's "Never Send You Flowers", "Sooner Than Soon" and "Free As A Bird". The first of these attracted the attention of local manager Duff Roman, who signed them to the local Red Leaf label. In early 1965, Red Leaf published "Never Send You Flowers" on 45, which suddenly became very popular on the local radio station. By then, the group had changed its name to The Paupers. In the fall of 1965, Red Leaf released the group's second single, "If I Told My Baby". In December 1965, Duff Roman dragged "The Paupers" to his own label "Roman Records", where he released a couple more singles - "For What I Am", and then a cover of the famous rock and roll "Long Tall Sally", but both forty-five were not successful. The fate of "The Paupers" began to undergo some changes when they met in the club "El Patio" with Bernie Finkelstein, who offered them his services as a manager. Finkelstein told the musicians that the best artists are those who have their own material, not covers. Early in 1967, Finkelstein flew to New York with a four-song demo of The Paupers and approached MGM Records, a major record label. To his surprise, the group was treated quite favorably and offered to sign her to their Verve Forecast affiliate. It was the first US recording contract for a Canadian rock band. In June 1967, the group took part in the Monterey International Pop Festival. The debut album "Magic People" went on sale on July 1, 1967 - the day of Canada's national holiday and collected the best reviews in music magazines.
