Today marks 50 years since martial law was imposed by former president Ferdinand Marcos. Under the military rule, Congress was padlocked, the press was silenced, and alleged human rights violations.
This year's commemoration of the declaration is different because his son and namesake Ferdinand Marcos Junior is now President.
