Charleston Chasers - What Wouldn't I do For That Man

2009-02-08 10

The Charleston Chasers was a pseudonym for Red Nichols Five Pennies, but the name was used by Columbia for various other outfits including the Original Memphis Five. This denomination was used when recording as a studio band for Columbia. In this post, they are performing a jazzy version of this famous song from the feature fims "Applause" and "Glorifying The American Girl". It is remarkable how few period disc recordings are available of this popular tune. The only other one I know was recorded by Frankie Trumbauer's Orchestra, strangely enough with a male vocalist, Smith Ballew, singing the chorus. The most impressive vocal recording other than the actual film transcript sung by Helen Morgan may very well be the one by Lee Morse in the 1930 Paramount short "A Million Me's (see confetta's channel). Vocal by Eva Taylor. For the reasons explained above (loose studio outfit), exact personnel of instrumentists is equally unknown. Record was made in 1929.
