Buying new things, or holding on to old things can become a problem. The want to keep old things is psychological. They remind us of the past, or they make us feel a certain way. We as people have a relationship with our possessions. The idea is to gain control of your possessions. You can prevent buying things that you don’t need. Your house may be running out of space. You are having trouble putting things away. Put your goals into writing, This will stop you from forgetting. You could tell your friends to help you stick to your goals. Ask yourself, why do I really need this item? What do I achieve from owning this product? Plan ahead so that you can act with self control. Recognize when you are making an impulse buy. Write down what made you make that impulse buy, and prepare to not make it again next time. Prepare yourself for the emotional discomfort of not having something. Remind yourself that thoughts are only thoughts. Even if you do not end up needing the item, it will not be the end of the world. Write down everything that you buy, and everything that you throw away. If you see that you have recently bought items that you have recently thrown away, this may prevent you from buying the same things in the future that you will end up throwing away. Reflect on how much money you have saved by not buying.
