Rod Stewart is doing his own form of public service, filling a pothole near his Essex estate.

The 77-year-old hard road singer posted a video on Instagram of himself shoveling gravel near his home in Harlow, Essex, saying: "I'm fixing the road near where I live because no one cares. ."

They said the first rut was the deepest and Stewart bemoaned the damage that poor road maintenance could have done to his Ferrari.

"People have their cars torn down," he said. "An ambulance had a flat tire the other day. My Ferrari simply can't get through here."

He added: "We are filling the holes ourselves and the M11 is costing millions of pounds."

Stewart was teased on Instagram for shoveling snow in tracksuits and a high-profile skirt after he cleaned out his garage in all white during the initial lockdown.

If Harlow was flooded, Stewart would no doubt show up with a sandbag and his bald head.

His intervention came the week that his wife Penny Lancaster was first arrested as a special constable at the City of London Police. After appearing on the reality show Famous and Fighting Crime, she applied to become a volunteer police officer and joined the police force.

Last year, Stewart told the Guardian he wasn't worried about his wife when she was patrolling the streets. "She wants to take care of the city she loves, which is London. Go girl! She's 6ft 2in so I don't have to worry about her," he said.

This isn't the first time Stewart has had a dispute with his local council. In 2020, the conservation arm of Epping Forest County Council opposed his plans to modernise the windows of a Grade II listed 10-bedroom mansion he bought in 2013 for £4.65m.

Despite his reputation as one of the world's most enduring rockers, Stewart is increasingly showing his domestic side on social media with the catchphrase "Wake up Maggie I have something for Instagram."

In November, he posted a video of his family doing the dishes after dinner while he danced in the kitchen with a yellow tea towel on his head.
