It is to Muhamma, a picturesque village on the shores of Vembanad Lake in Alappuzha that we take you for a visual trip this month. Coir, known as the ‘golden fibre of Kerala’ is an inevitable part of the economic as well as social life of Muhamma. The village can rightly be called a ‘coir village’ since it is one of the primary centres of coir manufacturing in Kerala itself. The proximity of many water bodies makes it convenient for the coir industry to flourish. There is hardly any other place where you can have a detailed look into the manufacture of coir.
Fibre is derived from retted coconut husks. The final product, coir, is made with the help of some simple machinery. Many handicraft as well as utility items are made out of this eco-friendly, economic and durable fibre.
Muhamma is a village supported by Kerala Tourism as part of its rural destination programme.
