Joining the nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, thousands of people demonstrated in Delhi on Friday. At a few places, particularly Daryaganj in Old Delhi, the protests were marred by violence. Nearly three dozen protesters were injured and around 40, including minors, were detained.

Central Park in Connaught Place, however, hosted a demonstration in support of the law that attracted a few hundred people, mostly members and supporters of the Sangh Parivar. They shouted slogans like “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. They spoke in favour of the law, the Delhi police and the Narendra Modi government, and railed against “traitors” and JNU students.

Among those who addressed the gathering was Bharat Sharma, head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Delhi. “All of us here will go door to door, from tomorrow, to explain the CAA to at least 10 people in our respective colonies and debunk the myths about this law,” he said. “And it has to be initiated by the youth.”
