On an extremely hot day at the Lord’s, English captain Eoin Morgan won the toss & elected to bat first against India. The pitch from the outset looked like a belter of a track even though it had a small covering of grass. Both the teams went unchanged in this ODI in London.
The Indian seamers, both Umesh Yadav & Hardik Pandya were taken for plenty by openers Bairstow & Roy giving headache to the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. But in walked, the man with the magical arm this season, Kuldeep Yadav & English batsmen were going back to the pavilion. Joe Root discovered his lost form & notched up his 12th ODI hundred making him on par with Marcus Trescothick as the highest century maker for England.
Chasing a huge target of in excess of 300, Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan & Rohit Sharma couldn’t take the game long. KL Rahul fell in the 1st ball & Kohli-Raina steadied the Indian ship. But after Kohli’s dismissal it seemed a difficult task for India with just Dhoni & Pandya in the hut.
With the match out of hand, Dhoni reached the milestone of completing 10,000 runs in ODI. He became the 12th batsman, 4th Indian & 2nd wicketkeeper to do so. Only Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly & Rahul Dravid have scored 10,000 runs in ODIs before Dhoni.
