North Bengal Rains: Flights Cancelled; Landslides, Flooding In Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Siliguri

Incessant rains over the last 24 hours have led to landslides in North Bengal and Sikkim. Severe damage has been caused due to the torrential rains. Several roads have sunk and rivers have damaged bridges. A cloudburst over the Kalimpong district in north Bengal turned the Teesta and its tributaries into raging rivers. Several flights in and out of Bagdogra airport were affected. Vistara airlines tweeted, “Customers are requested to allow more time for their journey.” IndiGo airlines tweeted, “Our flight operations are impacted.” Several places in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and Sikkim received over 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Gajoledoba in Jalpaiguri got around 350 mm of rainfall. Several tourists in Kalimpong were rescued. In South and East Sikkim districts too, heavy rains have brought normal life to a standstill.
