Venus was once like Earth as it had surface temperatures similar to present day Earth. It most likely had oceans, rain, snow and even tectonic plates, continents, and very speculatively, life.
One billion year ago, climate changed due to an intensive period of volcanism that evaporated the oceans and ended the water cycle, scientists speculated.
These eruption events can release enough carbon dioxide to provoke catastrophic climate changes.
Even though the largest eruption we are aware of wouldn’t be enough to cause such an important damage, what we think happened on Venus is a good indicator on what led climate change, and what could happen to Earth.
