NewsGuard, a firm that rates the credibility of websites, reported more than 500 websites had promoted misinformation about the coronavirus, including debunked claims about vaccines. The firm analyzed more than 6,700 websites and found 519 published false information about COVID-19. Some sites published incorrect health information or political conspiracy theories, while others were created with the intent to spread misinformation. COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths remain high throughout much of the U.S., and about 53% of Americans have been fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Launched in 2018, NewsGuard employs journalists to assess the credibility and transparency for the most popular news and information sites in the U.S., UK, Germany, France, and Italy.
