Chhattisgarh: Know Why Adivasis Have Been Protesting Against Central Forces In Silger

A day after a delegation of social activists met Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel over the Silger protest, the tribals scaled down the 28-day long massive demonstration on June 9. The villagers, however, reiterated that a symbolic protest will continue with less number of people. The activists cited fear of Covid-19 spread and farming as the reasons behind the decision. The villagers had been protesting against a new police camp set up at Silger. On May 17, the protest, that allegedly had Maoists dressed as tribals, turned violent and the crowd started attacking the forces. Police retaliated and opened fire, during which four persons had died, reported The Times Of India. Police maintained that all killed were Maoists. The locals told the media that after talks were held between CM, administration and activists, they have decided that the protest would be scaled down. The locals said that thousands of villagers were gathering every day for protest and it would now be reduced to only 10-15 people to press their objection against police camps.
