On October 12, Justice Madan B. Lokur, former judge of the Supreme Court of India, delivered the 2020 B.G. Verghese Memorial Lecture at the invitation of the Media Foundation.
In his lecture, he looks at the manner in which the freedoms of expression and assembly – guaranteed by the Constitution of India – have been compromised in recent years through the misuse of sedition laws,
Among the examples he cites are the cases of Dr Kafeel Khan, Devangana Kalita, Shehla Rashid and Simranjit Singh, and the pervasive, sweeping internet bans that have been imposed in different parts of the country from time to time.
