CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on April 22 said his elder son Ashish died of Covid-19 in the morning. Ashish Yechury would have turned 35 on June 9. Senior Congress leader & former Delhi government minister AK Walia died of Covid-19 in the early hours on April 22. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on April 21 informed that he has also tested positive for Covid-19. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has also contracted Covid-19. Tharoor, 65, said his sister, his 85-year-old mother and he were all Covid-positive, and that he is "hoping to deal with it in a 'positive' frame of mind, with rest, steam & plenty of fluids". Shortly after the above tweet Tharoor posted again, confirming that he & his family had taken the two required doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Leader of Congress Party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also tested positive for Covid-19 on April 21. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also tested positive for Covid-19 on April 20. India on April 22 reported the world's biggest-ever daily surge with 3.14 lakh new cases and 2,104 deaths since April 21. This is the fastest rise in cases and deaths any country has suffered till now.
