In this history documentary, Tony Robinson goes in search of the truth about one of Britain's most maligned monarchs, investigating whether Richard III really did murder his two nephews, the Princes in the Tower, following the death of his brother King Edward IV. Did he plot to take the throne for himself? If he did, what was his real motive? Contrary to popular perception, Richard III was loyal, fair, and effective as a ruler. He was much more than the villainous and one-dimensional Shakespearean caricature rumored to have had the Princes in the Tower smothered to death while sleeping. The question is, did he really do it?

Ruling under the House of York, Richard III was at war with his rivals, the House of Lancaster, led by Henry Tudor. The two royal houses' final Wars of the Roses battle would take place at Bosworth Field in Leicester on 22nd August 1485. The reward for the victor would be the Crown of England, while the reward for the loser would be death.

Much of what has been understood about Richard as historical fact turns out to be, at best, mistaken and, at worst, completely fabricated by subsequent generations. But just as his investigation is drawing to a close, an astonishing fact emerges that leads Tony Robinson to question far more than just the received notions about Richard III, calling into question the whole legitimacy of the last 500 years of the British Monarchy.
