A small manufacturing unit in Meerut is back to making the century-old scissors of Meerut after the Corona Lockdown. A glimpse of what goes into the making of each scissors of Kainchi. The process starting from putting the individual blades to heat and dipping it straightway in water to sharpening the final product and shipping it off to local markets and even international markets. The detailed process of making scissors is seen here. Kainchi as is popularly called in the local language is said to be the oldest living craft of Meerut. The industrious city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh is also called the 'Kainchi Capital' apart from the nickname of 'Sports city of India'. Scissor making has been a tradition for over three centuries in this city in North India. The scissors are made from recycled metal scraps. In a short interaction with the workers in this manufacturing unit in the heart of Meerut, we came to know that over 30 workers are engaged to make a single pair of scissors. The scissors made in Meerut is considered a better quality and durability by many users. Over 15 varieties of scissors are being forged here and distributed locally and even internationally. This includes scissors for various purposes, tailoring for cutting fabric, nutcrackers, small domestic purposes to uses in hardware stores. With competition from foreign markets which are cheaper, the industry is dwindling but we hope for a revival with ban on certain international market players.
