U.S. president-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday called on President Donald Trump to demand an end to the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol in a televised address, and called the storming of the Capital buildings by an angry mob an “unprecedented assault” on U.S. democracy, adding that the actions of rioters “borders on sedition.”
“Threatening the safety of duelly-elected officials; it’s not protest – it’s insurrection,” Biden said.
Protesters supporting Trump stormed the Capitol building seeking to prevent Biden’s election certification on Wednesday.
U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence was pulled from the House Chamber floor and police dispersed tear gas to push back protesters, telling members of Congress inside to put on gas masks. Several senators tweeted they were sheltering in their offices while security evacuated much of the building
