북한, 8차 당대회 1월 초순 개최…"80일전투로 훌륭한 소집조건"

North Korea will hold its 8th Workers' Party Congress in early January, and is expected to announce a new five-year plan.
The regime has admitted that its economic plans in recent years have fallen short.
The party congress could also be used to send a message to the incoming leadership in the U.S.
Kim Dami has the details.
North Korea has circled early January in the calendar for its long-anticipated 8th Workers' Party Congress.
"The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea adopted a decision on holding the 8th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea early in January 2021."
North Korea's state-run media also said that the politburo meeting, which was chaired by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, focused on confirming the agenda for the congress.
Observers expect the event to take place sometime between January 4th and 7th.
"A large number of the congress attendees will pay tribute at the Kumsusan Palace at the start of the new year. On top of that, January 8th is Kim Jong-un's birthday. It will probably be a three day event from January 4th to the 7th. "
The event will be the first of its kind in four years.
It is expected to cover a new five-year economic development plan, along with several other issues.
"Pyeongyang may send Seoul a message regarding restoring communication lines between the two Koreas. There may possibly be a congratulatory message for the incoming Biden administration too."
The expert added that the regime will likely hold a military parade to highlight the significance of the event.
Tuesday's meeting also reviewed the achievements and progress made during the regime's so-called '80-day campaign'.
In October, Kim launched the two month-long project to achieve national and economic goals ahead of the January congress.
The regime's state media said innovative achievements in all fields have laid a great foundation for the upcoming event.
