This video is a new edit of footage from the movie ‘Rude Boy’, synced to the audio of (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais, taken from The Clash album, ‘Rude Boy - The Directors Cut’, the ‘unofficial’ soundtrack bootleg.

The Clash had many great leap forwards in their career, and White Man was certainly one of them, both musically and lyrically. On it’s release in June 1978, White Man got very positive reviews and in the NME 1978 end of year polls, it was the best single of the year (and The Clash were Band of the Year).
The single had only been released a couple of weeks prior to the Glasgow show, and the performance we have here is raw and fresh and forthright.
In the movie, the performance is interrupted in the middle, with footage of Rude Boy Ray Gange watching the show from the side of the stage, and of a Glasgow Odeon bouncer chasing a young fan out of the venue.
Thankfully the audio of White Man could be replaced with the complete uninterrupted version of the same performance that appears on The Clash ‘Rude Boy – Directors Cut bootleg album’. Apparently the album was cut from a copy of a rare Rude Boy soundtrack cassette tape, issued for promotional purposes at the time, by CBS the bands label.
To date there has not been an official release of the Rude Boy soundtrack. Perhaps for authenticity reasons - most of the Rude Boy live tracks were not in fact live, but were re-recorded at Wessex Studios, in London in 1978, for inclusion in the film.
In replacing the audio, I decided to also replace the aforementioned section of footage, with a montage of the Glasgow crowd outside the venue before the show.
Hope you dig it!
