Cyclone Burevi: Orange & Red Alerts Issued For Tamil Nadu, Kerala; Track Storm Path & Wind Speed

Cyclonic storm Burevi has formed in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Meteorological Department announced late on December 1. Named by the Maldives, this is the second cyclone formed in the southwest region of the Bay of Bengal within a week. Burevi is also the third cyclone formed in the North Indian Ocean region, comprising the Bay of Bengal & Arabian Sea. On November 23, Cyclone Gati had formed in the Arabian Sea and had hit the Somalia coast. IMD said cyclone Burevi will cross Sri Lanka coast on December 2 evening/night. IMD informed that cyclone Burevi was nearly 650 kms east-northeast Kanniyakumari at 5:30 am on December 2. The storm, which will retain its intensity & maintain a wind speed of 75 to 85 km/hr gusting to 95 km/hr till December 4, will then emerge near Gulf Of Mannar on the morning of December 3. Red alert has been issued in four districts of the Kerala - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta. An Orange alert has been issued for Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam on December 2. Lakshadweep is expected to receive heavy rainfall from December 3-4. Fishermen are advised not to venture into southwest Bay of Bengal from December 1-3.
