Saffron Harvest in Kashmir- truly a family affair!

2020-11-27 70

Towards the end of October, thousands of acres of land in Pampore near Srinagar gets painted purple with the blossoming saffron crocus flowers. Complete families of farmers engage in the flower picking process with glee. Every saffron bulb acts as the source of three to flour flowers. The flowers are plucked into baskets and then collected together on sheets of cloth kept in a corner of the field. They are then taken home, where the stamens are separated from the flowers. It is the stamen that acts as the spice that we use. Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world and Pampore is the highest producer of Saffron in India. The flowering and flower picking season of saffron lasts over a fortnight and makes saffron the most important cash crop for Kashmiri farmers.
