Condemning the use of brutal force by Haryana in a futile bid to stop agitating farmers from going to Delhi, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh termed it an assault on their constitutional and democratic right to protest. He urged the Delhi Government to earmark for them a place to sit peacefully to highlight their concerns on the farm laws. The protest caused a heated back-and-forth between two Chief Ministers. While Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh flagged the "irony" of police action by Haryana against protesters on a day the country marked Constitution Day, his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar accused him of inciting the farmers. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on November 26 lashed out at the Haryana govt for trying to stop the "Delhi Chalo" march by farmers upset with the centre's new agricultural laws, calling the attempt "Punjab's 26/11”. He also tweeted an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Farmers are standing resolutely in the face of “cruelty”, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on November 26 as he hit out at the Modi government. Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda asked the Centre to treat farmers with dignity and engage with them, as he expressed "extreme distress" over police confrontation with them.
