When Typhoon Yolanda hit Leyte, one of the most devastating incident was the storm surge in coastal towns. Learning from this, Gary Dabasol decided to plant mangroves along the beach in Matalom using seedlings that are brought in by the waves. Mangroves provide so many environmental benefits. They serve as habitat for fish and shellfish, migratory birds, and sea turtles. Their dense roots act as filters to trap water pollutants. They slow down erosion and protect coastal communities from floods, hurricanes, and storms.
