The US Food and Drug Administration is recommending that food manufacturers list sesame as an ingredient on labels.
According to CNN, listing the ingredient would be voluntary.
The move is designed to help people who are allergic to sesame identify foods that may contain the seed.
Many Americans are allergic to sesame, and the labels would help them quickly identify foods containing sesame.
Under current FDA regulations, sesame must be declared on a label if whole seeds are used as an ingredient.
Labeling, however, is not required when sesame is used as a flavor or in a spice blend.
