Rajiv Gandhi served as the 6th Prime Minister of India. He was assassinated in a suicide bombing on this day on May 21, 1991, while campaigning in TN's Sriperumbudur for a Lok Sabha Congress candidate. He took office after the 1984 assassination of his mother, the then PM of India, Indira Gandhi, to become the youngest Indian PM at the age of 40.
