Pope Francis officially declared support for civil unions for same-sex couples for the first time.
The Pope made the groundbreaking remarks in a documentary film that was released on Wednesday.
Pope Francis said: "Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it".
He went on to say: "What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered".
The Pope has suggested in the past that he is not against civil unions, but this is the first time he has directly come out in favor of them.
The documentary, "Francesco" was released Wednesday in Rome.
