Japan's controversial Yasukuni Shrine is in the spotlight once again after former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a visit to the site today and new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga went an offering over the weekend.
Asked about the visit and the offering, Tokyo's Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said the government should not involve itself in the actions saying they were made in private capacity.
On Saturday, Seoul's foreign ministry expressed deep regrets over Suga's offering,... urging the Japanese leader to humbly reflect on history while China also urged Japan to keep its promise that it would reflect on history.
Among other war dead, the Tokyo shrine honors 14 men convicted as Class A war criminals after World War II and is generally viewed by Japan's neighbors as a symbol of the country's past militarism.
