빌보드 점령한 K팝...BTS•블랙핑크 최상위권 휩쓸어
Two of most famous K-pop groups Blackpink and BTS sit at the top of the U.S. Billboard Artist 100 Chart.
Blackpink occupy number one with BTS right behind at number two.
But, how did K-pop become so popular?
Jang Tae-hyun reports.
These days,... it's not uncommon to hear K-pop songs in the U.S. music charts.
Sitting at number one in the Billboard Hot 100 is a remixed version of 'Savage Love' by Jawsh 685, Jason Derulo and K-pop superstars BTS.
In at number two is another song featuring BTS... the all English track 'Dynamite.'
Meanwhile, girl group Blackpink is also at number one, sitting atop the Billboard Artist 100 Chart... followed by BTS at number two.
Rankings for the Billboard Artist Charts are based on a number of factors such as album sales, radio airtime and social media activity.
But, how did K-pop become so popular?
"K-pop has been on the outside of mainstream pop, but social media has allowed it to become more popular with fans emerging globally."
Collaborations with popular artists and labels overseas are also factors.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact too... but in a positive way.
"Now that the society is shifting towards non-contact, K-pop, which was already popular online, was able to take advantage of the situation. Fans are used to virtual activities and that eventually led to online concerts."
On top of their musical success,... Blackpink has become the first K-pop artist to be the subject of a Netflix documentary.
Released on Wednesday to 190 countries, 'Light Up the Sky' is a behind-the-scenes look at the group's journey to superstardom.
