Cape Town authorities attempt to evict people living in shacks during COVID-19 lockdown despite court ruling

Cape Town's Law Enforcement division has reportedly attempted to evict people living in shacks, despite a recent court ruling prohibiting Cape Town authorities from carrying out evictions during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Footage from September 7 shows resident Merlin Adamas, who recently erected a shack, explaining that she has two children and has nowhere else to go and therefore decided to erect a shack for herself and her family on the mountainside in Hangberg.

Speaking to the media, community activist Roscoe Jacobs explains that in term of the recent court order, Cape Town authorities would be acting illegally if they went ahead with any evictions.

A recent judgement in the Western Cape High Court prohibited the City from issuing evictions during South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown.

The City of Cape Town later announced that they would be appealing the judgement.
