An EU-funded project in Lahti, southern Finland, offers inhabitants rewards including bus tickets or free food if they ditch the car in favour of cycling or public transport, under a scheme to lure the public into lower-carbon lifestyles. The "CitiCap" app tracks a user's carbon emissions as they move around, by detecting whether they are travelling in a car, on public transport, on foot or by bike. The aim is to develop a "personal carbon trading" scheme that rewards citizens for green behaviour and which can be expanded to other cities.
