Every year Panchami of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month is called Rishi Panchami. Women fast on this day. Sapt Rishis are mentioned in the story of the Matsya avatar of Vishnu. It is believed that if their names are chanted then the effect of the person's sinful deeds goes away. According to Pt. Manish Sharma, Jyotishacharya of Ujjain, during the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu, there was a flood in the earth. At the same time King Manu was riding in a big boat with the Dipper. All these were protected by the Matsya avatar of Vishnu. It is said that the name of the Saptarishis should be recited daily.
हर साल भाद्रपद मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की पंचमी को ऋषि पंचमी कहा जाता है। इस दिन महिलाएं व्रत करती हैं। विष्णु जी के मत्स्य अवतार की कथा में सप्त ऋषियों का उल्लेख मिलता है। मान्यता है कि इनके नामों का अगर जाप किया जाए तो व्यक्ति के पाप कर्मों का प्रभाव दूर हो जाता है। उज्जैन के ज्योतिषाचार्य पं. मनीष शर्मा के अनुसार, विष्णु भगवान के मत्स्य अवतार के समय धरती पर जल प्रलय आई थी। उसी समय एक बड़ी नाव में सप्तऋषि के साथ राजा मनु सवार थे। इन सभी की रक्षा विष्णु जी के मत्स्य अवतार ने की थी। कहा जाता है कि सप्तऋषियों के नाम का जाप रोज करना चाहिए।
