South Korea reported 2-hundred-88 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, marking the seventh consecutive day its daily increase has been in triple-digits.
More than 6-hundred of those patients have come from a church in Seoul, and a series of chain infections has also been reported across the capital.
Lee Kyung-eun reports.
Cluster infections are popping up across Seoul following the large scale outbreak from a church in the city's Seongbuk-gu District.
On Wednesday, at least 18 students from a physical education academy near the church tested positive for COVID-19.
17 of the confirmed students are high school seniors preparing for the performance test for the college entrance exam.
All of these students were asymptomatic.
But they went for testing after the academy recommended all 60 of its students do so ahead of its reopening after the summer break.
It is yet to be found whether these patients contracted the virus from the patients linked to the church.
But concerns grow as this comes amid a series of chain infections linked to the church, where more than 6-hundred patients have been reported.
"South Korea has been witnessing triple-digit daily increases of COVID-19 infections for a week.
The Sarang Jeil Church cluster infection has led to second and third degree transmissions as the confirmed patients have been using public places."
The government has also raised concerns about a possible nationwide second wave of the virus,... as some of the patients attended a mass rally last Saturday.
Health authorities say that as of Thursday, 53 people have contracted the virus from the rally, 33 of which have connections with the church.
