Dramatic moment families are rescued after storm washed away road next to their homes

This is the dramatic moment stranded residents were rescued using a rope when floods caused a road next to their home to collapse.

The families were woken by heavy rain and flash floods in Las Pinas City, the Philippines.

Gushing torrents of water from an overflowing river had washed away the bridge that connects their homes to the main road - leaving them at the mercy of the rising water.

A brave neighbour volunteered to return to the trapped people on the houses and tie a rope on them so the people outside can pull them safely across the rising storm water.

Rowena Jaan, who lives by the creek, said they were surprised in the morning when some of her neighbour's house was damaged and swept away.

She said: "We are glad that no one was hurt and we are still with our families despite what happened."

All of the trapped families were rescued and are now staying in a temporary shelter provided by the local officials.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has earlier said that the Metro Manila will experience rain showers due to the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Southeast Asia is currently going through its annual rainy season lasting from May until October.
