A leader of the Abu Sayyaf group who was directly involved in the kidnap and execution of Canadian and German hostages was among those killed by Philippine troops during a firefight on Bohol island on Tuesday. Abu Rami's death has been described as a major setback to the militant group responsible for dozens of kidnappings in Sabah.
