'양심적 병역거부자' 35명 첫 대체복무... 10월 교정시설 합숙
For the first time, South Korean men that refuse mandatory military service due to personal or religious beliefs will be drafted for alternative military service from October.
The Military Manpower Administration said the first group of 35 that have been reviewed and approved by a committee will start their out a 36-month duty.
They'll attend training camps at local correctional facilities instead of military bases... tasked with serving food, supplies and facility maintenance.
The move follows a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that acquitted those that rejected military service due to their beliefs... prompting the government to come up with alternative ways for those to serve.
