국내 코로나 6일만에 40대...'거리두기'는 지역별로 조정
Our top story this afternoon.
South Korea reported an additional 48 COVID-19 cases on Monday.
Health officials say, while they are not considering raising the social distancing level just yet,... they are encouraging local governments to take swift measures.
Choi Jeong-yoon reports.
Another 48 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in South Korea on Monday bringing the total number to 13-thousand 137.
After having three straight days of 60 or more infections, the number of new cases fell below 50 for the first time in 6 days.
However, Seoul, Gyeonggi-do Province, Daejeon and Gwangju are continuing to see cluster infections.
Of the daily cases, 24 were local transmissions, with seven of those cases coming from Gwangju.
Once considered a safe-haven from the virus, the southwestern city of Gwangju has seen some 80 cases in just 10 days.
With the sudden hike in numbers and the route of transmissions uncertain,... some citizens are calling for stricter social distancing.
While health officials are not planning to raise the overall level, they are actively supporting local governments that increase their social distancing level independently.
With infections now scattered outside the capital region, Jeollanam-do Province has raised its distancing level to two on Monday, following the same move by Gwangju last Thursday.
Under distancing level two, indoor events of more than 50 people and outdoor events of more than 100 people are entirely banned.
Public facilities with mass gatherings are also closed.
As the number of daily cases varies by region, the central government is considering implementing different countermeasures depending on the medical resources and circumstances of cities and provinces.
Meanwhile, health authorities emphasized distancing at individual levels saying the number of infections with uncertain transmission routes has increased over the last two weeks.
He once again encouraged wearing masks as people could become negligent with the weather getting hotter.
