Global COVID-19 infections surpassed nine million on Monday.
And a tally by AFP shows more than a million new cases have been reported in the past week,... raising concerns that the virus may be spreading faster.
Half of the world's total infections are from the U.S. and Europe.
By country, the U.S. topped the list,... with around two-point-four million cases.
Brazil ranked second,... with around one-point-one million,... followed by Russia and India.
According to CNN,... almost half of all states in the U.S. reported a rise in new COVID-19 cases compared to the previous week.
Some states are considering tougher actions,... saying the virus is spreading at an unacceptable rate.
"COVID-19 remains a very fast spreading virus that will remain in Texas, the United States and across the entire world until treatments are available to mitigate it."
China is working to contain a recent cluster of infections in Beijing.
Chinese health authorities reported 22 new cases on Tuesday,... 13 of which were from Beijing.
A total of almost 250 infections have been reported in Beijing in the 12 days since the first case of this outbreak in Beijing was recorded on June 11th.
But some residents in Beijing don't seem too worried, saying that the outbreak is relatively small.
"I think it's under control. It should be fine. Because the number of cases is decreasing."
Meanwhile, India, the country with fourth highest number of cases,... has shown signs of improvement in containing the virus spread in its financial capital, Mumbai.
The BBC and local Indian media outlets have reported that the spread of infections has started to slow down in the densely populated Dharavi neighborhood which had been a coronavirus hotspot in Mumbai.
