A heroic policeman rescued a stranded dog from a filthy canal.

Police Corporal Sorasak Ritthikhotm noticed the struggling pooch while he was on duty in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 1.

The officer clambered through metal railings and edged on his knees along a large steel pipe before balancing on a concrete block.

Sorasak then reached out to the dirty dog and scooped her up in his arms before passing him to onlookers standing on the pavement on the Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.

The policeman's colleague Sayomporn Saengtep, who helped with the rescue, said the dog was aggressive, which made it more difficult to catch.

Sorasak added: "I tried my best to take the dog out of the water but it was fierce and appeared to be running away from me. I'm just glad that we could finally rescue her.''

Police believe the dog had escaped from its home. They took her away from the canal and let nearby residents take care of her.
