Today, South Korea celebrates the 60th anniversary of the movement that led to the toppling of the authoritarian government of Rhee Syngman and put the country on the long road to democracy.
President Moon, in a commemorative speech,... said the government will seek to have the April 19th Revolution listed by UNESCO.
And the spirit of that movement, he said, is also the basis for South Korea's fight against COVID-19.
Kim Do-yeon reports.
President Moon said that the government will be pushing for the 1960 democracy movement to be listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
Speaking at a ceremony on Sunday to mark its 60th anniversary,... Moon said that the movement is at the root of Korean democracy.
The April 19 Revolution was the first democracy movement in a country newly independent after World War II, and it was also the start of student movements around the world. In order to give special commemoration to the spirit of the April 19 Revolution and pass on its spirit to humankind, we will pursue its listing by UNESCO."
On April 19th, 1960,... thousands of demonstrators, mostly students, took to the streets,… to oppose the government of President Rhee Syngman, which had rigged an election the month before.
The authorities cracked down hard,... killing more than 180 civilians and wounding thousands more.
This led to the toppling of the Rhee government, which had ruled for 12 years.
President Moon said that based on this spirit,... South Korea will be preparing for the post-coronavirus era through solidarity and cooperation among the people.
We will be able to give great courage to people worldwide if we are able to get through the "post-corona" situation through unity and cooperation based on transparency, openness and democracy. The government will be preparing for a new way of life and a new world order post-corona through solidarity among the people.
Moon also stressed that the government will be doing its best to revive the ailing economy and to protect people's lives.
He promised full support for companies that keep their workers employed,... and called for everyone's cooperation to get through the situation.
