The controversy over mob lynching snowballed after 49 eminent citizens wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing their concern on law and order. Over the last few years, mob lynching incidents have increased. In 2017, 43 incidents happened in which 13 people were killed. In 2018, 31 incidents took place claiming 13 lives.
