The Queen Addresses Parliament at State Opening

Queen Elizabeth II set out details of the government’s legislative programme for the next Parliamentary session in a speech to MPs and peers in the House of Lords.

The 22 new bills in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s agenda include measures to help the UK prosper after Brexit, more support for the NHS, tackling serious and violent crime, and investing in science and infrastructure.

The Queen’s Speech tradition can be traced back to the 16th century, and it represents the only regular time when the three components that make up Parliament — the Sovereign, the House of Commons and the House of Lords — come together.
