Hundreds of residents in apartment blocks in the Philippines clap and cheer for medical workers battling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Footage shows the uplifting scene with people applauding in Mandaluyong City in Manila on April 1.

Onlooker Rica Velasco said " We've been practising this every day in Tivoli Garden Residences at 6 pm. Yesterday was the loudest and longest at eight minutes and we expected even more to participate in moving forward. Hope this can catch on. Many of our frontliners were taking videos and those outside the complex could hear us too. We cheer for all the frontliners: doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, cleaners, security, garbage collectors, grocery/retail workers, PNP, all those people working the front lines now.''

The Philippines has recorded 3,094 coronavirus cases and 144 deaths since the pandemic began. Officials have enforced lockdowns, curfews and food restrictions to try and stop the spread of the pandemic.
