Our top story this afternoon.
President Moon Jae-in has pledged every effort to compensate the victims and families of the April 3rd Jeju incident.
Speaking at the annual memorial ceremony for the victims on Friday, President Moon said the issue remains unresolved.
He also called for joint efforts with the National Assembly to pass a revised bill to recover the victims' honor.
Take a look.
"We'll continue efforts for substantive compensation to be realized as basic justice. I urge the National Assembly to pay special heed to the revised special act on the Jeju April 3rd incident. The government will also combine its efforts for the bill's smooth passage."
The bill, submitted in late 2017, calls for the victims and their families to receive financial compensation and for additional investigations into the truth behind the atrocities.
The April 3rd incident saw tens of thousands of civilians killed by authorities in a years-long crackdown in Jeju Island from the late 1940s.
They were protesting against U.S. military-led rule following Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule.
