Jussie Smollett Is
Indicted for Filing
False Hate Crime Reports A Cook County grand jury
indicted the former 'Empire' star
on six charges of disorderly conduct. In January of 2019,
the actor made headlines
after he claimed he was
attacked by two men in Chicago. Smollett claimed the men
made racial and homophobic
remarks and put a rope around his neck. Chicago police
initially investigated
the case as a hate crime. Police then asserted
Smollett had paid two Nigerian
nationals to stage the attack in
an effort "promote his career." In March, Smollett was indicted on
16 felony counts of disorderly conduct. Weeks later,
all charges were dropped. The actor denies he
fabricated the attack. He has
filed a countersuit against the city of Chicago.
