Residents, farmers and winegrowers in Uco Valley, a region in the western Argentine province of Mendoza whose economy is largely based on agriculture, warn about the consequences that the use of chemicals in opencast mining could have on the region's rivers. The parliament of the province of Mendoza repealed a law last week that would have allowed the use of such chemicals in mining.
