Foreign Nationals take refuge inside Central Methodist Church in Cape Town

Refugees fled to the Central Methodist Church in Cape Town after South African police removed them from the Waldorf Arcade in St George's Mall, outside the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) last week. The foreign nationals are asserting that they fear for their lives because of xenophobic violence.

The Methodist minister, Reverend Alan Storey, has opened the doors of the church to asylum seekers.

He said: "The way people were treated last week was completely unacceptable.

"Inside the Church is completely overcrowded, there is not enough space obviously. So everyone knows it's temporary. It can't last forever."

The footage, captured on Tuesday (November 5), shows families sleeping and eating on the Church pews.
