The best way to keep our brains young and healthy is exercise.
Exercise also helps reduce anxiety or depression, …and is effective in increasing creativity.
Park Se-young has more.
The brain accounts for two to three percent of body weight …and consumes about 20 percent of daily energy intake.
It functions best after exercise because exercise secretes serotonin and dopamine, …which activate the brain and put it in its optimal condition.
"What happens when we exercise is we use more of our brain cells than in any other human activity. And when we use our brain cells, that makes our brain better, tougher."
According to the professor, exercise is as effective in reducing anxiety and depression as taking antidepressants or tranquilizers.
Our bodies were designed to move as a result of the hunter-gatherer lives of our ancestors …and exercise strengthens the brain just like muscle.
Exercise is also effective in increasing creativity.
"We see throughout history that many of our famous authors and thinkers use walking or moving or Einstein riding his bicycle to help come up with ideas and be creative."
The professor says we can change our brains by exercising, …like walking fast or running four times a week.
The most important thing is exercising steadily, …and working out with other people is recommended because it is much more effective.
