Exclusive: Watch Janelle Monáe Teach Cynthia Erivo an Important Lesson in Harriet

Cynthia Erivo stars in the upcoming Harriet Tubman biopic, aptly titled Harriet, and now we have an exclusive clip from the drama to share with you.

Above, we see the Widows actress as the legendary American freedom fighter, who traveled over 100 miles to the north to escape slavery and the vindictive man who she was forced to work under. But after experiencing freedom herself, Harriet vows to return to the south to help free hundreds of slaves via the Underground Railroad, including her husband and her family.

"Without [them] I'm just a stranger in a strange land," she tells her ally in the north, Marie (played by Janelle Monáe). "If I'm free they should be, too."

Marie reluctantly agrees to help her friend dress and act like "a lady," which includes some important lessons about how to properly introduce herself and "not to look a strange white man in the eyes." But, ultimately, the most important tool Marie gives Harriet is a way to defend herself just in case trouble comes for her.

In addition to Erivo and Monáe, Harriet stars Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters. Watch our exclusive clip from the film above before it arrives in theaters on Nov. 1!
